North Korea is seeking to end human rights campaigns in the nation since Shin Dong-hyuk, the famous North Korean prison camp escapee, admitted parts of his story were inaccurate.
Shin’s biography, Escape from Camp 14, was mostly true but places and times were changed, author Blaine Harden says.
“From a human rights perspective, he was still brutally tortured, but he moved things around,” Harden said.
The Washington Post reports Supreme Leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un is now pushing to stop human rights campaigns in response to Shin’s admissions.
North Korean website Uriminzokkiri, which is believed to be controlled by the nation’s government wrote that “all data on North Korea’s human rights and related reports must be nullified, and plots on human rights… must be stopped.
“Anti-republic human rights liars should feel embarrassed and repent their crimes.”
Human rights advocates argue that Shin was only one of hundreds of prisoners in North Korea and the country is committing crimes against humanity.
