Gay couples in North Carolina have filed a lawsuit which seeks to overturn North Carolina’s provision for the religious freedom of civil magistrates.
According to CBN News, three gay couples are filing the lawsuit after the magistrates declined to marry them based on the magistrates’ beliefs that marriage is between one man and one woman.
In a case that is reminiscent of the high-profile case of Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, the magistrates have opted out of performing marriages that would be in conflict with their religious beliefs.
North Carolina passed a law in June which provides religious freedom to magistrates in such cases.
However, the gay couples are attempting to overturn that law.
Republican state Senate leader Phil Berger said that, despite about five percent of the state’s roughly 670 magistrates opting out, every couple who has sought a marriage license in the state since the religious freedom law was enacted in June, has been able to obtain one.
"This is just the latest attempt by the far Left's political correctness mob to force their beliefs on everyone else by trampling the First Amendment guarantee of religious freedom," Berger said.
