New Zombie Nativity Taps into Culture's Zombie Obsession

A new kind of nativity scene portraying baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, an angel, and a donkey as zombies, is making waves this Christmas season.

Charisma News reports that the zombie nativity is set to be released in time for Christmas 2016. The unorthodox nativity is the brainchild of Ashley Gojic and Justin Contre, the creators of NerdTalk Toys.

The new toy is sure to offend many, Charisma News acknowledges, but it also is representative of our culture’s seeming obsession with zombies, as evidenced in shows such as The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Gojic is a self-described atheist and Contre is a Catholic.

"I think it is funny to take something that is so innocent or sacred or protected and throw it on its head by making them zombies or something else they shouldn't be," said Gojic.

Contre said the nativity has actually allowed him to have a conversation about why families display nativity scenes with his own family.

“We talked about what they believe, what I believe and how we think Jesus should be represented," he said. "They are happy I have a Nativity in my house now, even though it is zombies."

The promotional material for the new nativity says it can be be a Halloween and a Christmas decoration.
