The New York State Assembly announced Thursday it would be launching an impeachment investigation into Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The announcement comes as Cuomo has faced increasing allegations of sexual harassment in recent weeks.

“The reports of accusations concerning the governor are serious,” Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Assembly said it would also look into claims that Cuomo’s administration may have mishandled COVID-19 deaths in state nursing homes.

Cuomo and his team have not commented on the new investigation.

Heastie said the Assembly would have authority to interview witnesses, subpoena documents and evaluate evidence to consider possible articles of impeachment.

Also Thursday, 40 Assembly Democrats signed a statement calling on Cuomo to resign, along with 19 out of 43 Democratic state senators. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio also signed the statement, saying Cuomo’s alleged behavior was “disgusting” and said he could no longer serve as governor.

“In light of the governor’s admission of inappropriate behavior and the findings of altered data on nursing home COVID-19 deaths he has lost the confidence of the public and the State Legislature, rendering him ineffective in this time of most urgent need,” the statement reads.

Previously, Cuomo apologized for “teasing” and argued he was “being playful” with female colleagues.

Earlier this week he said he would not resign.

Several have now said Cuomo acted inappropriately with them. The allegations include forcibly kissing an aide, asking another questions about her sex life, and, in another allegation, trying to kiss a co-worker at a wedding they were both attending.

Most recently, an unnamed staffer claimed that Cuomo groped her under her blouse at the Executive Mansion last year, a source told the Albany Times Union.

The Albany Police Department said the latest allegation may “rise to the level of a crime.”

Cuomo has denied the allegations.
