Naghmeh Abedini Seeks Help from Pope for Imprisoned Husband

Naghmeh Abedini is seeking the aid of Pope Francis in negotiating her husband’s release from an Iranian prison.

Pastor Saeed Abedini, an American Iranian, was visiting Iran to do mission work when he was captured. He has now been held in a dangerous Iranian prison for three years under what his wife and many others believe are trumped up charges by the Iranian government.

Saeed Abedini is also in critical need of medical attention which the Iranians refuse to give him, but instead make him suffer through beatings and inhumane living conditions.

Naghmeh Abedini is very active in promoting awareness of her husband’s plight. She recently underwent a fast to pray for her husband’s release. She has also sent a letter, requesting an audience with Iran’s president.

Now Naghmeh Abedini is requesting the help of Pope Francis, according to ABC News.

“He would be a crucial voice in getting Saeed out of prison,” Naghmeh said. “They respect the pope, as a theocracy.”

Naghmeh was present to hear the Pope’s address to Congress this morning. The Vatican has not officially responded to Naghmeh’s request, however.

ABC News reports that Francis was instrumental in negotiating the release of an American prisoner in Cuba, so many believe that he has the influence needed to help free Pastor Saeed.
