Muslim Woman Forced to Go to Church while in Jail Sues State of Ohio

A Muslim woman claims Cuyahoga County jail correction officers forced her to attend Christian worship services during her 60-day jail sentence.

Sakeena Majeed was serving jail time for misdemeanor assault conviction for assaulting two Cleveland police officers and a third man, according to Christian Today. The Kansas native alleges she was threatened with solitary confinement if you didn’t attend the services led by a Baptist pastor.

"That should be offensive to anybody, no matter what your religion is," said her attorney Matthew Besser, who filed the lawsuit. "The government can't tell you what god to pray to or to pray at all."

The lawsuit claims corrections officer Regina Watts and Sheriff Frank Bova, and Cuyahoga County violated of Majeed’s constitutional rights.

"We accommodate every faith up there, and no one is forced to go to any service," Bova said in a phone interview. "It's all voluntary."
