Meriam Ibrahim Says Unauthorized Book about Her Life is 'a New Persecution'

Meriam Ibrahim, who spent months in a Sudanese prison for refusing to renounce her Christian faith, recently said that she feels like she is being persecuted all over again by writers who are exploiting her story.

Christian Today reports Italian journalist Antonella Napoli is writing a book based on Ibrahim’s life called “Il mio nome è Meriam,” or “My Name is Meriam.” Ibrahim did not give consent for the book to be written because she wants her story to be told accurately.

Ibrahim told Christian Today that being taken advantage of feels like "new persecution from some weak people who do not know the meaning of faith, but are working to collect money from the tears of the oppressed.”

She also said that the publishers were "killing me and the whole of my family" and that the book was "like the rope around my head.”

Napoli, a human rights activist and writer, headed Italian efforts to free Ibrahim from prison. The author said that she intends to write about campaigning for Ibrahim’s freedom and her personal experience with the family. She also expressed hope that “My Name is Meriam” could help others from religious persecution in Sudan.
