Meriam Ibrahim Remains Firm in Faith, Husband Says

Daniel Wani, the husband of condemned Sudanese Christian Meriam Ibrahim, said that his wife is clinging to her faith in prison.

In an interview with CNN, Wani said that despite pressure to return to her father’s Muslim faith, she remains firm in her decision.

“There is pressure on her from Muslim religious leader that she should return to the faith. She said, ‘How can I return when I never was a Muslim? Yes, my father was a Muslim, but I was brought up by my mother.’”

“I know my wife. She’s committed. Even last week, they brought in sheikhs [Muslim elders] and she told them, ‘I’m pretty sure I’m not going to change my mind,’” Wani said.

Wani said that the support of human rights advocates all over the world will hopefully affect the sentence appeal process. The couple’s lawyer said that the court’s decision may come within the next week, though there is no official deadline.

Ibrahim is “frustrated” as she remains imprisoned for apostasy but “I’m standing by her to end. Whatever she wants, I’ll stand by her,” Wani said.
