Local Dog becomes Symbol of Undefeatable Texas Spirit in Hurricane Aftermath

Hurricane Harvey has left a wake of devastation behind as it tore through southeast Texas this past weekend. Heavy rains and flooding continue to pummel coastal Texas cities and rescue efforts are ongoing.

In the midst of the historic flooding and damage to businesses, roadways, and homes, however, one story of a fearless dog is capturing hearts with what many are calling the tough Texas spirit.

TheBlaze.com reports on the story of Otis, a dog who lives in Sinton, Texas, just north of Corpus Christi. Following the deluge of water and high winds Harvey dumped on coastal Texas, the German Shepard mix was seen walking down the street carrying a bag of dog food in his mouth.

He was spotted by Tiele Dockens, a woman who also lives in Sinton. Dockens snapped a photo of Otis and posted it to Facebook with this caption: “This dog is walking around Sinton TX carrying a entire bag of dog food with him. LOL #refugee PSA: Owner is found. He is not a stray he just got out on his street. Dogs name is Otis.”

Many of those who commented on the photo said that Otis showed the indomitable Texas spirit.

Salvador Segovia, who said Otis belongs to his five-year-old grandson, Carter, attests that Otis is a special pet.

“Otis is an all around special dog. He’s been instrumental in helping comfort Carter following numerous hospital visits for seizures and asthma. Otis is also a local celebrity.”

“Otis can go to Dairy Queen and he can get a hamburger. He’s the only dog allowed to lie down in front of the county court house,” Segovia added. “He also goes to H.E.B. He’s not a stray. He’s a good dog.”
