Lebanon Bans ‘Wonder Woman’ Film because Star is Israeli

The new film Wonder Woman, about the female superhero made popular by DC Comics, has been banned in Lebanon, according to CBN News.

The reason why the film has been banned from theaters in Lebanon is due to the fact that Gal Gadot, the actress who plays Wonder Woman, is Israeli and even served in the Israeli Defence Forces as a combat trainer for two years.

“Screenings for #WonderWoman have been cancelled tonight, the film is no longer debuting tomorrow in cinemas across Lebanon,” tweeted Warner Bros. Lebanon. Movie posters began to be taken down on Wednesday.

Additionally, a boycott group explained on their Facebook page that they are boycotting the film because Gadot supports Israel’s military and the military’s policies against Palestinians.

Others questioned the ban: "We have few questions to ask. First, why now? Because the actress has been acting, we believe, in eight or nine films before and it was all released in the country, so why now?" asked Isaac Fahed, sales and distribution manager of Grand Cinemas.

The film is opening in theaters tomorrow, June 2, in the U.S. It has very favorable ratings from critics who viewed it in a pre-screening.
