Iowa House Committee Passes 20-Week Abortion Ban Bill

An Iowa House subcommittee has passed a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks. The bill will now go on to the full committee for approval.

If passed, the bill, known as Iowa Senate File 471, would ensure that those violating the law face felony charges, according to LifeNews.com. The bill would, however, make exceptions for unborn babies diagnosed with conditions considered to be “incompatible with life.”

The bill reportedly has a rough road ahead to approval since it is opposed not only by pro-abortionists, but by some pro-lifers who want stricter anti-abortion laws and are not willing to compromise on a 20-week abortion ban.

Rep. Shannon Lundgren (R-Peosta) is leading the House subcommittee that approved the bill and explains why she believes it is a good measure:

“It’s not that I’m not (for) life at conception, either. I campaigned on that,” she said. “But some of us are willing to take an incremental look at how we can start to save lives immediately.”

Sixteen states already have similar pain-capable unborn child protection laws in place. Research shows that unborn children are capable of feeling pain at 20 weeks or even earlier.

“I could never imagine subjecting my tiny patients to a horrific procedure such as those that involve limb detachment or cardiac injection,” stated Dr. Colleen A. Malloy, a professor of neonatology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
