Has Meriam Ibrahim been Freed for Good This Time?

Sudanese Christian Meriam Ibrahim has been released from authorities for a second time reports Christian Today. Ibrahim, who was formerly condemned to the death sentence for apostasy, had charges dropped on Monday, then was detained in a Sudan airport on Tuesday and taken into custody again. The latest reports now say that the Christian mother of two is free once more.

Ibrahim’s lawyers said the family were detained in the airport on account of document fraud accusations.

But BCC Sudan correspondent James Copnall said the detainment at the airport could have been a sector of Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Service who did not agree with the court’s release decision.

“It is very possible that NISS did not like the decision to release Meriam Ibrahim, and re-arresting her and her family was a way of making this point to the rest of the Sudanese government. It is also conceivable that one part of NISS accepted Mrs Ibrahim's release, while another section was not happy with it. Mrs Ibrahim's release and re-arrest simply underline the fact that there are many decision-makers in Sudanese politics, and they do not always agree with each other,” Copnall said.

“We’re delighted Meriam has been released, but it should never have come to this,” said Release Chief Executive Paul Robinson.
