Guatemala’s President Seeks Out Famous Evangelist after Horrific Tragedy

A well-known evangelist has met with Guatemala’s president to offer comfort and encouragement in the face of a national tragedy.

A fire in a home for girls in San Jose Pinula, a town east of Guatemala City, the capital, resulted in the deaths of 40 of the girls, according to CBN News.

Evangelist Luis Palau met with Guatemalan president Jimmy Morales to offer words of hope after the tragedy.

“This is a difficult time for the nation of Guatemala," Palau said. “Many people are hurting. Many families are suffering. Many people are asking deep, fundamental questions."

Palau had been in the country holding a evangelistic festival when the fire occurred on March 8 at the Assumption Safe Home.

After meeting with Morales, Palau stated, "I offered my deepest sympathy to the people of Guatemala, especially the families directly affected by the tragedy, and reminded the president that the evangelical community is praying for the nation during this difficult time.”

The tragedy at the girls home reportedly occurred when angry residents set fire to mattresses in the home in an attempt to draw attention to the unacceptable living conditions there.

The plot backfired, however, and the girls who were in the home at the time became trapped by the fire and died.

Several of those who survived the fire are being treated for their injuries in the U.S.
