First Church of England Clergyman Marries Gay Partner

Canon Jeremy Pemberton has become the first Church of England clergyman to marry a gay partner reports Charisma News.

The church does not support Pemberton and his partner Laurence Cunnington on their marriage and stated that clergy should “model the Church’s teachings in their lives.”

The wedding took place Saturday, only two months after the Church of England had formally stated that ministers of the church should not enter in same-sex marriage. The Church also announced that a person who was married to someone of the same sex would not be ordained.

However, the Church of England said last year that gay unions should include a church service. That service would not be considered a “blessing” they stated.

Vicar Peter Ould said, “The problem with the recommendations as they stand is that they give priests a carte-blanche to have public services affirming sexual relationships outside of marriage.”

In regard to his wedding Pemberton said, “I love this man, and I want to be married to him. That’s what I want. It is the same as anyone who wants to get married.”
