An extended ceasefire was broken on Tuesday (Aug. 19) when Gaza struck Israel with rocketfire; Israel reciprocated the attack, launching its own rockets into the Gaza Strip.
Israeli and Palestinian officials had previously decided to extend the truce by 24 hours; the ceasefire had already continued between the opposing sides for several days.
The Hamas decision to fire three missiles at southern Israel was a violation of the ceasefire agreement, as Israel Defense Forces officials had stated that they would not negotiate under fire.
Mark Regev, an Israeli spokesman said, “Today’s rocket attack on Beersheba is a grave and direct violation of the cease-fire to which Hamas committed itself. This is the 11th cease-fire that Hamas has either rejected or violated.”
According to the New York Times, the exchange of missiles did not cause either side physical harm.
