Drinking in Moderation Advocate, R.C. Sproul Jr., Arrested for DUI

Christian leader R. C. Sproul, Jr. has been arrested for a DUI--a fact that is ironic given his advocacy for drinking alcohol in moderation.

According to ChristianNews.net, Sproul was arrested and charged with “operating a vehicle while intoxicated” and “operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more,” in addition to driving under the influence with a minor as a passenger.

A week after this arrest occurred, Sproul resigned from his position at his father’s Ligonier Ministries as well as his position at Reformation Bible College.

“Last Friday, the board of directors of Ligonier Ministries and Reformation Bible College received and affirmed the resignation of Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. He is stepping away from his duties at the ministry and the college for personal reasons,” said a statement released by the ministry.

Sproul was known for advocating for consumption of alcohol in moderation. He pushed back against Christians who claimed that drinking itself is a sin.

He even wrote the forward to the book Drinking with Calvin and Luther: A History of Alcohol in the Church in which he stated, “[I]t’s not enough that we should drink, but that we ought to drink well.”

Sproul has also been a guest on the Reformed Pubcast--a broadcast discussing Reformed theology and beer.

Sproul came under fire last year when he revealed he had visited the adultery website, Ashley Madison. He said he did not make an account on the website, however. Sproul’s wife, Denise, passed away in 2011.

Sproul has a hearing for his DUI in February and could face fines or jail time.

What do you think? Is it okay for Christians to drink in moderation?
