Halloween is just around the corner and we are sure to see little boys dressed as superheroes and little girls dressed as princesses, but this year, Disney is trying to break down those gender stereotypes.
Disney will not be labeling its Halloween costumes as gender specific this year.
Normally, Halloween costumes at the Disney store would be organized in sections, with a “boys” costume section and a “girls” costume section, but this year the only label will read “kids.”
The Independent Journal states that by not labeling costumes as gender specific, Disney is sending a clear message to kids that they can be whoever they want to be.
The policy comes on the heels of a similar policy by the retail chain Target. Target recently decided to discontinue labeling sections of the store based on gender after a woman complained about Target’s gender-themed signs.
The reactions to Disney’s decision were mixed.
Some, like Tanya Smith, voiced their approval of Disney’s decision on Twitter: “[T]hey should of done that a long time ago!! Did you know Peter Pan is often played by a Women? Facts,” she tweeted.
Roz Young agreed, stating on Twitter, “Yes! Toys and costumes are for all kids!”
Others disagreed.
“Little Frankie can trick or treat as Tinker Bell...This is now our country.. Had enough yet Patriots?” Dirk Stunning tweeted.
Iowa Women for Trump tweeted, “First @Target said its removing gender specific labels. Now @Disney is removing gender specific labels from its Halloween costumes #BOYCOTT.”
