12 Killed in Terrorist Attack on French Satirical Newspaper

Masked gunmen have reportedly targeted a Paris-based satirical newspaper, killing 12 people. Three more victims were critically injured in the attack.

Three gunmen stormed the office of Charlie Hebdo shouting, “Allahu akbar!"

ABC News reports that the newspaper had published controversial sketches of the Prophet Muhammed for years and had prompted criticism from Muslims in the past.

The attack has been labelled a “terrorist operation” by French President François Hollande.

The gunmen reportedly fled the scene and hijacked a car. Paris remains on the highest level of security as authorities search for the attackers.

According to ABC News, the attack was France’s deadliest in decades.

President Barack Obama responded to the shooting in a statement saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this terrorist attack and the people of France at this difficult time. France is America’s oldest ally, and has stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States in the fight against terrorists who threaten our shared security and the world. Time and again, the French people have stood up for the universal values that generations of our people have defended. France, and the great city of Paris where this outrageous attack took place, offer the world a timeless example that will endure well beyond the hateful vision of these killers. We are in touch with French officials and I have directed my Administration to provide any assistance needed to help bring these terrorists to justice."
