Noah Trailer Gives First Look at Big-Screen Epic

“I saw water, death by water. I saw new life.”

When I heard these words in the new trailer for Noah, a movie directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Russell Crowe, I became much more optimistic. The trailer spills over (forgive the pun) with dramatic confrontations, enough CGI effects to fill a whole server farm, and plenty of ethos.

But there’s more to the Noah of the Bible—and ultimately God’s revelation—than special effects. There’s always the promise of a Savior: “In [the Ark] only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God.” 1 Peter 3:20b-21

So, call me hopeful. Josh Larsen of Think Christian had this same type of guarded expectation:

For my part, I’m less interested in whether or not Noah (Russell Crowe) is wearing the right shade of sandals than if the movie seems to place this particular Bible story within God’s overall narrative of creation-fall-redemption-restoration. (As a fan of Aronofsky, director of The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream, I’m also curious to see if he’s able to put his distinctive stamp on this behemoth of a production. Alas, aside from a quick shot of watery mud squelching through Noah’s feet, much of this could pass for the work of Roland Emmerich.)

The trailer reveals that Aronofsky and Ari Handel took much liberty in fleshing out the narrative of Noah (found in Genesis 6-9). Of course, filling up a two-hour, big-screen epic requires some extrapolation. But, as Larsen points out, the biggest concern is whether the movie will stay faithful to the larger issues of the fall and the promise of restoration in Christ. Some Christians who saw an early screening of the film were not enthusiastic about the results, and Paramount Studios has reportedly requested changes.

Whatever the case, we’ll find out more when the movie lands on March 28, 2014.
