TheBlaze.com reports how well-known actress Nicole Scherzinger has been making headlines recently, and the reason may surprise you. Scherzinger has taken a stand in speaking out on her strong views surrounding one particular debate: abortion and the right to life. Specifically, the actress’s stance came to be public knowledge of late as she struggled with the decision of whether or not to accept a TV role which had her character undergoing an abortion.
The specific film in question is an upcoming TV remake of the film “Dirty Dancing.” In the original 1987 film, the character known as Penny Johnson undergoes a dangerous, botched abortion and nearly loses her own life. The film is poised to be highly profitable and widely viewed, so Scherzinger considering bowing out has caused quite a few people to take notice, especially since her withdrawal sparked debate surrounding such a controversial subject.
A self-professed pro-lifer, Scherzinger eventually accepted the role—albeit hesitantly at first—but later has come to be firmly resolved in her decision. “So I got the role and I almost didn’t take it because I didn’t want to promote abortion, because my character has an abortion,”she said. “But I was like, hopefully they can learn from, you know, her ways and I can be a positive influence.”
Scherzinger explains that in making her choice, she was highly influenced by the counsel of her grandfather, who is a preacher, and who, after much prayer, firmly stated to Scherzinger that he believed this was the role that she was “meant to do.”
Scherzinger recently shed more light on her stance in an interview with Daily Mail, where the actress explained that her family is “really hardcore”against abortion, also revealing that her own mother gave birth to her when she was just 18 years of age. “My mum got pregnant with me when she was 17 and had me when she was 18,”Scherzinger said, adding that her mom’s own parents were adamantly against abortion. The actress knows she is here today because of their strong stance, and says of her own life and the sacredness of life in general, “I came out, so I just want to, you know, encourage everybody to keep your babies.”
