Will She Stay or Will She Go?

March 22, 2006

Will Katie Couric leave the today show for the anchor chair at CBS news? Will it matter if she does?

Two questions. The answer to the first is that it depends. It depends on whether she is offered more money than CBS will offer and if she is fed-up with getting up early and having not much of a social life.

The bigger question is whether it will make a difference. That’s easy. It won’t. Katie Couric is as liberal as Dan Rather, Mike Wallace, Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams, the late Peter Jennings and anyone else you can name at any of the big networks. They are all interchangeable parts.

Katie Couric will be the CBS news anchor if advertisers and the women they are trying to reach say they want her. It’s all about women… in entertainment and increasingly in news. And it’s all about the women’s products advertisers want to sell. That is an undisputable fact.

So, go for CBS and the money, Katie, or stay at NBC for even more money. It doesn’t matter in terms of how the news is covered. It only matters to the advertisers.
