What's So Great About America Today?

520 years ago today, Christopher Columbus discovered America, or so the history books tell us. Maybe it was the Bahamas. In any case, he discovered something that was already there, and those who followed transformed it, eventually becoming what we are today. What are we?

Some say the most powerful nation on earth. We can't stop terrorists. The last war we "won" was Desert Storm, but Iraq is a mess and so is Afghanistan.

What's so great about us? Morally we are falling apart. 55 million of us have been killed by abortion and there aren't enough politicians or judges who want to even slow them down, much less stop them. People live together without marriage and have babies born out of wedlock.

Twenty percent of the nation no longer believes in God. Politics and politicians won't save us because they don't address our central problem, which is sin. Imagine a politician calling for individual and national repentance. He or she would be mocked by the media and the secular left. Happy Discovery Day anyway, America.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
