Wealth and Poverty

July 7, 2005

The meeting of the G-8 western leaders in Gleneagles, Scotland is about wealth and poverty.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair and thousands of protestors wants to send western wealth to poor African nations.

None of these people have explained why more aid will help Africa when previous aid hasn’t.

There is something else.

All of the rock stars who staged the Live 8 concert…how many of these multi-millionaires and in some cases, billionaires, have given any of their own money to this cause?

It would be interesting to know.

Anyone can be charitable with other peoples money, but true charity, as the old saying goes, begins at home.

Media people should ask these questions of Bob Geldof, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney and other super wealthy musicians.

And by the way, what expertise do any of these people have and why should they be listened to when it comes to important international policy matters?

Does their celebrity qualify them as experts on anything besides musical chords?

In Northern Ireland, I’m Cal Thomas.
