Thoughts on the Anthony Weiner Scandal

By the time this airs, Anthony Weiner may have quit the New York mayor's race, but whether he stays or not, some things need to be said.

First, that he would run shows the low expectations people have of U.S. politics. Leadership reflects followership and that we seem to care less about personal behavior in others reflects our lack of concern about such things in ourselves. Bill Clinton didn't start this but the easy forgiveness by too many Americans says something about those Americans.

Second, and this may be difficult for many to comprehend, but any one of us could do what Weiner has done, or worse, given the right circumstances and temptation. Don't think you are above it. Jeremiah the prophet says, "The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked; who can know it?"

Paul writes in Romans that "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." All means all. While your sins and mine may not be in the caliber of Anthony Weiner, they are still sins and separate us from God without the intervention and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
