There is so much in the new book by former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates it is impossible to dissect it all in one minute.
Gates claims positions taken on Iraq by President Obama and Hillary Clinton during the 2008 political campaign were totally political.
About Vice President Joe Biden, Gates writes: “I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.” A white house statement said Biden was “one of the leading statesmen of his time.” That’s frightening. I wonder why the statement is in the past tense?
About the Afghan war, Gates writes: “the President doesn’t trust his commander, can’t stand Karzai, doesn’t believe in his own strategy and doesn’t consider the war to be his…for him it’s all about getting out.” There are some contradictions in the book as when Gates seems to endorse decisions he has criticized, but it’s a revealing work by an insider and it can’t be good news for Hillary Clinton’s presidential aspirations.
