Marco Rubio Better Be Right

The so-called Gang of Eight senators has presented an immigration reform measure designed to do something about the 11 million illegal aliens -- excuse me -- undocumented workers. Republicans think they need this in order to not lose more of the Hispanic vote. Florida Senator Marco Rubio is promoting the measure which he says is tough and has several so-called "triggers" designed to shut off the process if each step is not achieved.

We're told border security is primary. We're told the illegals first have to go home before applying for citizenship. We're told citizenship is not a reward.

First, legalizing law-breakers won't make them vote for Republicans. Second, we've been down this road before, in 1986 under Ronald Reagan. The Democrats won that one. What makes anyone think they won't win this one? Marco Rubio is a great guy, but he's a freshman. He hasn't been in the Senate long enough to realize that liberals lie. I hope he's right about this bill. If he isn't, that will be 11 million new Democratic voters.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
