Manufacturing New Life

July 13, 2009

British scientists claim to have found a way to make sperm. It’s being sold as a revolutionary infertility treatment. Like all medical advances that tamper with human life, you can bet this one will fit into the “Brave New World” genre.

The assault on the value of human life proceeds with speed. With more than 50 million abortions tolerated in America and Britain, it is a very short step in the direction of euthanasia and laboratory manipulation toward Aldous Huxley’s novel.

This could be the triumph of the evolutionary world view. If we see ourselves as having evolved from slime with no author of life, no purpose for living beyond pleasure and making money and no destination after we die, then manipulating life and creating sperm is no big deal. Where this leads, though, is to a system where bureaucrats get to decide who lives and who dies based on mathematical formulas and the productivity of the individual.

Abortion, cloning, laboratory sperm, designer humans that include eye color, athletic ability and anything else made to order is getting closer.
