Goodbye, Guantanamo. Welcome, Terrorists?

January 23, 2009

President Obama has directed the closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison for confessed and suspected terrorists. Where will he put them and what will happen if even one of them comes back to kill Americans? Many of those released, according to the Pentagon, have already returned to the terrorist field of battle.

The president’s action may make liberals and European leaders feel better but it can only encourage our enemies, who live by no standards of decency. They torture, behead, imprison and terrorize. They care nothing about the Geneva Convention or what we do. They are out to destroy our way of life through immigration, intimidation and eventually subjugation. Their history proves it. Their words and actions today show they have not changed.

This is what the new president faces. Will he face it with resolve, or surrender? He promised on Tuesday to defeat the terrorists. How will he do this? He hasn’t said, but closing Guantanamo before he knows what he will do with these people is more like capitulation than a strategy for victory.
