Last Christmas season, Southland Christian Church released a video of kids telling the Christmas story. That video went viral and has now received nearly 24 million views.
The video features adults dressed up as the characters in the Christmas story--Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, angels, and wise men--while their voices are dubbed by children who are recounting the story.
Southland’s pastor even took part in the video and dressed up to play the angel Gabriel who appears to Mary.
“Thank you for coming,” says adult Joseph in a young boy’s voice while looking down at baby Jesus and saying, “I love you and you the best baby I ever seen. There, I said it.”
Judging by its popularity, the video has clearly charmed the internet audience. It offers a fresh take on the ages-old Christmas story, seen through the eyes of children.
Southland’s Creative Director Hanna Wahlbrink said the video was unscripted. Wahlbrink added that the church has heard from people all around the world who enjoyed the video. The church even made a follow-up Easter video to the original Christmas one after receiving requests.
“We’re reaching people in a different way that we ever expected,” Wahlbrink said in an interview with Today.com about the video.
Southland is based in Kentucky and has four different campuses.
