A number of westerners are joining with the Christian militia group Dwekh Nawsha to help fight ISIS in the Middle East.
The Christian group, Dwekh Nawsha, means “self-sacrifice” in Aramaic. Breitbart reports the group has joined with Kurds to fight off ISIS soldiers who are trying to overtake Christian villages.
“It’s very different,” said Brett, a US army veteran who has joined with the Dwekh Nawsha. “Here I’m fighting for a people and for a faith, and the enemy is much bigger and more brutal.
“These are some of the only towns in Nineveh where church bells ring. In every other town the bells have gone silent, and that’s unacceptable,” he added.
The group is also working to stop persecution against Yazidis.
“[ISIS doesn’t] discriminate when it comes to killing, torture and so on,” Khamis Gewargis Khamis told ABC.
“These are barbaric people, they came here only to die for what they believe in, so you can imagine the terror that they are spreading among the families, the kids and so on.”
Some of the foreign fighters who have joined the Dwekh Nawsha could face penalties for joining the fighting. The Assyrian community leaders have asked that Australia not penalize Australians who join the group.
