Tensions are high in Ukraine, as Russian forces have gained control of the European nation’s Crimea peninsula. While Western leaders pressure Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, the European Union is prepared to provide 15 billion in aid to stabilize the country’s fragile financial condition.
As Congress returns to Washington facing its largest international crisis in years, Senator Marco Rubio (Fla – R) expressed concern about Russia’s actions.
“It is critical the House of Representatives and Senate work together to send a strong and unified message that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is unacceptable, and take quick action to punish President Vladimir Putin,” Rubio said in a statement. “The United States must make clear to Putin that by violating Ukraine’s sovereignty and violating multiple international commitments, he has made a strategic miscalculation that will lead to severe impacts for Russia’s economy and its standing in the world.”
Raised in a nation encircled by Communist countries, Marius Forte, an economist raised in Vienna, Austria, but attended American schools says there is a direct contrast between the freedom he experienced in the West and the enslavement policies at work in the East--as well as discuss the old Soviet Union and the possibility of an emerging new Soviet-like empire.
"Unopposed aggression invites more aggression. It is that simple,” Forte said. “What is to stop Vladimir Putin to collect one former Nation of the Soviet Union after another and bring them all together once more under the firm grip of Russia? Who would stand in his way?”
Sergey Rakhuba, president of Russian Ministries, has issued an urgent call for prayer and support for the crisis in Ukraine.
"With new reports raising concerns that Russia and Ukraine may be on the brink of war, my heart bleeds for people on both sides of this conflict,” Rakhuba said. “I love the Russian people and have committed my life and ministry to them, but I cannot justify the actions of the Kremlin.”
Rkhuba added that Alexander Turchinov, the new acting president of Ukraine and an evangelical Christian, has called on his nation and the world to pray as well.
"Please pray with us specifically that evil forces would be stopped in any attempt to destabilize, divide and conquer Ukraine and that there would be no bloodshed as a result of this conflict and peace would be restored.”
