Thousands Gather for Myles Munroe's Memorial Service

Thousands gathered this week for the funeral service of Dr. Myles Munroe and his wife Ruth, who were killed in a plane crash.

The funeral took place in the Bahamas, the home of the couple’s church, Bahamas Faith Ministries.

Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie said Dr. Myles Munroe was "indisputably one of the most globally recognizable religious figures our nation has ever produced."

Munroe was born to a poor family in 1954. He later attended the Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, where he earned a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. He returned to the Bahamas to start the church.

"I never desired to be a minister. I desired to help people," Munroe said.

"We are here, sent from our heavenly home to colonize earth with the kingdom of heaven," Munroe said in a 2012 Turning Point episode.

Munroe told Turning Point  that he realized his purpose in life at 13 after his teacher told him he would never amount to anything.

"And (my mother) gave me her big Bible," he said. "One verse of scripture, Ephesians, chapter 3, verse 20. And she said, 'You go in that dirty room and you read that.'

"And I went I read the Scripture and my tears were dropping on the page as I remember what the teacher said to me," he recalled. "And that Scripture said one thing, it said 'Now unto him, who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above far beyond you could ever think, ask or imagine according to the power that worketh in you,' and I remember my tears began to turn into laughter."

Eight other people headed to an annual leadership conference were also killed in the plane crash.
