Bishop T. D. Jakes, senior pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas, recently became embroiled in controversy within the Christian community and beyond when his comments in an interview on HuffPost Live were interpreted as supporting the LGBT community.
Jakes has since issued a statement on Facebook, clarifying his comments and what he believes. He asserts that his comments were misconstrued and reiterates his orthodox stance on sexuality.
Jakes’ comments concerning his views on the LGBT community were especially pinpointed by both liberals and conservatives because he used the words “evolved” and “evolving,” indicating that his beliefs are shifting to a less stringent definition of marriage, and even that he may be leaning toward embracing the homosexual community.
However, according to Charisma News, Jakes claims that there wasn’t enough time left in the interview to explain his choice of words more fully.
“I simply meant that my method is evolving—not my message. I was shocked to read that this was manipulated in a subsequent article to say I endorsed same-sex marriage! My position on the subject has been steadfast and rooted in Scripture.”
Some, like Dr. Michael Brown of Charisma News, remain uncertain concerning Jakes’ stance on the subject of homosexuality and gay marriage. Brown is calling for Jakes to issue a straightforward and clear statement of his beliefs on the issue.
