Survey Claims Conservatives would Prefer a Family Member Marry a Democrat than an Atheist

New research claims that politically conservative Americans would rather see a family member marry a liberal than an atheist.

The Pew Research survey found 73 percent of polled conservatives would be displeased if a relative married someone without faith in God. But only 30 percent of respondents indicated that they would be unhappy if a family member married a liberal.

The survey also found that 49 percent of all Americans indicated that they would not be pleased to see a family member marry an atheist. At the same time, just 9 percent of Americans said they did not want family members to marry a born-again Christian.

Less than a third (27 percent) of liberals surveyed indicated that they would be sad to see a relative marry a born-again Christian. Nor did most liberals care if family members married politically conservative people. The majority of respondents (73 percent) said it did not matter.

Pew researchers interpreted this to mean “most Americans are comfortable with political diversity in their households.”
