Slain Gorilla Receiving More Media Coverage Than ISIS’ Victims

The media has given disproportionate attention to Harambe the gorilla as opposed to the Coptic Christians killed by ISIS last year, found a conservative news blog.

According to ChristianToday.com, NewsBusters, a website whose purpose is to “provide the immediate exposure of national media bias, unfairness, inaccuracy, and occasional idiocy,” found that mainstream media such as the networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC devoted much more time to reporting on the death of Harambe the gorilla than they did to the death of 21 Egyptian Christians.

The news networks spent one hour, 28 minutes, and 17 seconds covering the story of Harambe the gorilla, but only 14 minutes and 30 seconds covering the story of ISIS killing the Coptic Christians.

The 21 Egyptian Christians were killed for their faith in a video broadcasted by ISIS in February 2015. Many of the martyrs were shown to cry out to Jesus in their final moments.

Harambe was a gorilla who was shot at the Cincinnati zoo after a 3-year-old child fell into his enclosure. Much debate about whether the zoo needed to shoot Harambe to protect the boy has ensued. The boy’s mother has also been criticized for not watching her son more closely.

NewsBusters called the disproportionate news attention given to Harambe as opposed to the Christian martyrs “the very definition of absurdity.” The site also accused mainstream news networks of “routinely prioritis[ing] animal life over human life.”
