Satanic 'Snaketivity' Scene on Display at Michigan Capitol

The Detroit chapter of the Satanic Temple has set up a Christmas display at the Michigan Capitol featuring a so-called “Snaketivity Scene.”

The Snaketivity display has a slogan which reads, “The greatest gift is knowledge” with a snake wrapped around the Satanic Temple’s Cross. The snake is also presenting a book called “Revolt of the Angels” presumably as a gift.

The group, which does not actually worship Satan, said that the atheist display was their way of being included in the Christmas festivities.

The Satanic Temple’s spokesperson Jex Blackmore told the Lansing State Journal, "I think that this holiday season is a time of year that is celebrated in many different ways. Having our government endorse one singular viewpoint or method of celebrating the holiday season is problematic when we have a diverse community of people in Michigan. We wanted to add to that conversation by having our representation of how we may celebrate this time of year."

Michigan Sen. Rick Jones responded to the group’s display by setting up a Nativity scene at the Capitol.

Jones said, “They could have put theirs up in July or April or sometime. They didn't need to put it up in the Christmas season. That's OK. We're going to ignore them. I'm not afraid of the snake people. I'm sure that Jesus Christ is not afraid."

The Snaketivity display will remain at the Capitol until next Tuesday (Dec. 30).
