Report: 18,000 Babies Die Each Year in U.S. from Late Term Abortions

Pro-life group leaders and other are joining with Sen. Lindsey Graham this week to introduce the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

The act would stop late abortions when unborn babies are thought to be capable of feeling pain, according to Life News.

“Abortion is the human rights issue of our time. Despite where a person comes down on the issue of life, one cannot discount that a baby can feel pain at 20 weeks or five months of pregnancy. In fact, the majority of Americans agree that abortions at 20 weeks, or when a baby feels pain, should be restricted,” said Penny Nance of Concerned Women for America.

According to Congressman Trent Franks, more than 18,000 late term abortions are performed every year on healthy unborn babies in America.

“These are innocent and defenseless children who can not only feel pain, but who can survive outside of the womb in most cases, and who are torturously killed without even basic anesthesia,” he said.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 9,700 abortions were done at 18-20 weeks and 7,200 abortions were done on babies older than 21 weeks. The CDC doe not get its number from the states.

“The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection applies protection beginning at 22 weeks LMP (20 weeks fetal age), about the beginning of the sixth month,” Johnson wrote in a memo to Congress.  Beginning just one week later, one-fourth to one-third of premature babies survive long-term with good neonatal care.”
