Relevant's Facts about Consumerism May Make You Rethink Your Priorities

Consumerism is a powerful force in America. The nation recently celebrated the biggest shopping day of the year; Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving which marks the official beginning of Christmas shopping season.

Many have bemoaned the commercialization of Christmas, especially in recent years, but what are the actual statistics

Jesse Carey, writing for Relevant, provides some hard facts that may cause you to rethink your consumerist mentality this holiday season.

Carey provides 11 stats on the consumerist habits of Americans.

Number one provides a stark reality: “The amount Americans spend in a single weekend is more than half of the total they give to churches in an entire year.” This will certainly cause us to reassess our priorities.

Another stat in Carey’s list shockingly says that “nearly 40% of food in America goes to waste.”

Other stats from Carey’s list reveal that Americans spend over $100 billion on fashion accessories and that consumers who spend money on things such as fashion accessories only make up 12% of the population.
