Poll Reveals Majority of Americans Oppose Taking in Syrian Refugees

A recent poll has revealed that a majority of Americans do not support bringing more Syrian refugees into the U.S.

The Christian Post reports that a Bloomberg poll, released Wednesday and conducted Nov. 15-17, revealed that 53 percent of Americans oppose taking in more Syrian refugees.

In addition, only 28 percent of those polled favored proceeding with the current refugee resettlement plan “without religious screening.”

According to thinkprogress.org, Some Republican presidential candidates such as Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz have suggested that the refugees be screened based on their religion, and that priority should be placed on accepting Christian refugees since there is less of a threat that they will commit acts of terror.

President Obama has firmly denounced this suggestion, however.

According to the Bloomberg poll, 11 percent of Americans says they favor refugees who are Christian.

The Christian Post reports that only 2.4 percent of the asylum-seekers are Christian, however, and 96 percent are Muslim.

Disturbing reports have surfaced that Christian refugees don’t often frequent refugee camps because they are persecuted by Muslim refugees who are also there. A recent government report on genocide in the Middle East will exclude Christians, perhaps due to this reason--that Christians are not often present in the refugee camps, and therefore cannot tell their stories.

The House of Representatives has voted to suspend acceptance of more refugees, but Obama has said he will veto the bill.
