An Oklahoma doctor was arrested Tuesday (Dec. 9) after authorities discovered he had been scamming women by telling them they were pregnant, them selling them abortion-inducing drugs costing $620.
Nareshkumar G. Patel had been operating an abortion clinic since the 1980s.
Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt condemned Patel’s actions saying that his practices were in “blatant disregard for the health and well-being of Oklahoma women.”
"Oklahoma women should be able to trust that the advice they receive from their physicians is truthful, accurate and does not jeopardize their health,” Pruitt said.
Authorities were alerted to Patel’s malpractice when a woman died from cervical cancer months after the doctor claimed to have performed an abortion on her. But officials reported that the woman’s cervical cancer would have been too far advanced for her to conceive; the woman’s autopsy confirmed this as well.
Patel is now being held in the Oklahoma County Jail and faces up to three years in prison for three counts of fraud.
