Nigerian troops have reportedly killed Mohammed Bashir, the terrorist who appeared to be acting as the leader of Boko Haram since the death of the group’s former leader.
Nigerian forces battled Boko Haram militants this week in the city of Maiduguri in Borno state; the ministry has now said that the fights resulted in the death of Bashir. Several other militants died or were captured, and 135 surrendered, the Nigerian forces said.
"In the course of those encounters, one Mohammed Bashir who has been acting or posing on videos as the deceased Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric character known as leader of the group, died," a statement from the ministry said.
"Since the name Shekau has become a brand name for the terrorists' leader, the Nigerian military remains resolute to serve justice to anyone who assumes that designation or title."
Nigerian troops had claimed to killed Shekau in the past, then found to be either mistaken or as Shekau would be featured in propaganda videos later on.
