New Syrian Christian Bishop Brings Hope after ISIS’ Destruction

A new Syriac Orthodox bishop was inaugurated this past weekend and has ushered in hope for Syrian Christians persecuted by ISIS.

The Christian Post reports that Christians in the northeastern Syrian city of Hasakeh celebrated Archbishop Maurice Amseeh’s inauguration on Saturday.

Amseeh’s inauguration marks the first time since four years ago that the community will have a bishop to lead them. The previous bishop fled when Islamic State militants took control of the area.

The Syrian people, and particularly Christians and other religious minorities, have been subject to genocide carried out by the Islamic State. In addition, over 330,000 people have been killed in Syria’s Civil War. Millions of people have fled the country due to the violence and turmoil.

In these discouraging times, Amseeh’s presence is bringing new hope to the Syrian people.

"It's true that many have left, but we're still here, and what happened today is the proof that we're still here in this country and that we will stay," said a 23-year-old Syrian student.

Amseeh has expressed his commitment to begin to help the region rebuild.

“As soon as Deir Ezzor is freed from terrorism, I will make a blessed trip there to start rebuilding both buildings and people,” he said.
