Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) recently argued on the Senate floor that the U.S. should take action to stop China’s human rights abuses.
In the past few years, under President Xi Jinping, China has exponentially increased its crackdown on religion. Christians especially have faced imprisonment, beatings, and even death, and many churches have been forced to close.
Rubio, who was one of President Trump’s rivals in the 2016 presidential election, recently highlighted two of these cases of human rights violations in China and called on his colleagues in politics to take action to help persecuted Chinese minorities.
Rubio looked at the cases of Jiang Tianyong and Tang Jingling, according to Christian Today.
Jiang disappeared after visiting a fellow lawyer who had been jailed. He is reportedly being held at an undisclosed location and has not been allowed visits from his lawyer or his family.
Tang was arrested and accused of “inciting subversion of state power,” after he participated in honoring the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. In 2016, Tang was sentenced to five years in prison.
"Inside the grand edifice of the court, we can see stately and ornate furnishings and decorations, and we can see the government employees in dignified attire. But we cannot see the law and we can definitely not see justice,” Rubio said, while urging U.S. officials to take action.
