Dominic Ongwen, a senior commander in the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), has reportedly surrendered to US forces. Ongwen served as deputy to LRA head Joseph Kony, a war lord who captured 66,000 children and forced them to become soldiers.
Christian Today reports Ongwen was wanted for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Before Ongwen’s identity was confirmed, US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said, “If the individual proves to be Ongwen, his defection would represent a historic blow to the LRA's command structure.”
Officials believe Ongwen was in charge of the Sinia Brigade, a group which carried out attacks in northern Uganda.
According to Christian Today, the LRA is believed to number as few as 200 militants today. Previously the group was responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 people.
