Living Nativity Scene on Display outside Supreme Court Building

A live display of a nativity scene is being staged outside the Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C.

CBN News reports that Christians dressed up as Mary, Joseph, shepherds, animals, angels, and even a real baby took part in the event.

Peggy Nienaber of Faith and Action, one of the groups sponsoring the nativity, said the purpose of the event is twofold.

"One of the reasons, of course, is to proclaim that Jesus was born this time of the year. And the second is our religious freedom. We want everyone to know they can exercise their religious freedom rights."

Pastors also gathered for the event and led a time of prayer and worship.

"The greatest event in all of history was the birth of Christ at Bethlehem when God entered humanity as Emmanuel," said Rev. Rob Schenck of Faith and Action.

Participants in the event urged other Christians to stage similar displays outside their local courthourses.

"Some places you don't need a permit. Some places you do need a permit," Nienaber told CBN News.  "And we're saying, 'Go out and get a permit. Put on a Live Nativity.'"
