Kim Davis Remains Firm in Convictions, Receives Outpouring of Support

Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk jailed for her refusal to issue same-sex marriage licenses, is receiving an outpouring of support as she continues to remain firm in her convictions.

Davis, who was jailed last week after being found in contempt of court for refusing to comply with the court’s ruling that she must comply with the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize gay marriage, still holds with her initial convictions that being forced to issue same-sex marriage licenses is a violation of her religious freedom.

Harry Mihet, one of Davis’s lawyers with the Liberty Counsel, visited her in jail and reported that she remains positive and at peace, according to The Blaze.

“She had been reading her Bible and wanted to share a Scripture with the public from 2 Timothy 1:7-8, which says, ‘God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in the suffering for the gospel and the power of God,’”a Liberty Counsel statement said.

Judge David Bunning, who mandated that Davis be jailed until she is willing to comply with her job duties, provided a reasoning for his decision: "The court cannot condone the willful disobedience of its lawfully issued order. If you give people the opportunity to choose which orders they follow, that's what potentially causes problems."

Many disagree with Judge Bunning’s ruling, using Davis’s case as a rallying cry for religious freedom.

Evangelist Franklin Graham came out in support of Davis, characterizing the case as a battle for “religious freedom,” according to The Christian Post.

“As Kim fights this battle, she is really fighting for religious freedom for all of us,” Graham added.

Graham also criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s comments on Davis’s case.

In an interview, Trump stated that he regretted to see Davis jailed, but that ultimately he believed she should follow “the law of the land,” and that if Davis could not morally issue licenses herself, she should allow her deputies to do so.

Trump is not the only Republican presidential candidate who has weighed in on the case.

According to ABC News, both former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Texas Senator Ted Cruz are traveling to Kentucky today to support Davis and to participate in a prayer rally being held outside the jailhouse.

Cruz has stated, “I stand with Kim Davis. Unequivocally. I stand with every American that the Obama Administration is trying to force to choose between honoring his or her faith or complying with a lawless court opinion.”
