Gilmore Girls Creator: ‘If Show Continued, Rory Would Probably Have an Abortion’

Many fans of the show Gilmore Girls were excited for the follow-up to the popular series which was released on Netflix over Thanksgiving Day weekend. According to the creator of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, however, one of the show’s characters would likely have made a decision that would be disappointing for many Christian viewers.

The Christian Examiner reports that the Gilmore Girls series ran from 2000 to 2007 and followed the story of Lorelai Gilmore who got pregnant at 16 and was raising her teenage daughter, Rory, as a single parent.

In the recently-released follow-up to the series, Rory reveals to her mother that she, too, is pregnant while unmarried.

The original series had an implicit pro-life message since Lorelai chose to keep her daughter Rory, but creator Amy Sherman-Palladino says Rory would likely make a different choice than her mother and get an abortion.

"There's nothing harder in the world than being a parent," Sherman-Palladino told Buzzfeed. "And if you are not equipped mentally, financially, emotionally, to take that on, you can't do it because the consequences are ridiculous."

And "unless [Rory] thought, I'm really going to make a go at this and that's really going to make me happy, and I'm really gonna make this kid happy," Rory would have had an abortion, Sherman-Palladino continued.

Some commentators have pointed out that, if Rory got an abortion, it would completely contradict the entire premise of the show since Lorelai chose to keep her daughter and thus the Gilmore Girls were created.

Conservative radio host Glenn Beck commented on the absurdity of Rory getting an abortion:

"What is the story? The story is a 16 a girl made a decision, and it's been the best decision of her life, and she has produced Rory. If she would have had an abortion, Rory wouldn't exist. ... It makes the entire storyline meaningless."
