Chip and Joanna Gaines, the Stars of the popular show “Fixer Upper” have come under fire recently for allegedly being opposed to same-sex marriage.
According to The Daily Signal, Buzzfeed recently ran an article (and other news sites such as Cosmopolitan, Us Weekly, and Jezebel picked it up) that implied the Gaineses were anti-gay because they attend a church where the pastor believes homosexuality is a sin.
However, the Gaineses are not even quoted in the article and they have not personally expressed their views on homosexuality or same-sex marriage.
Katrina Trinko of The Daily Signal also questions why it is even headline news that a pastor of a Christian church supports traditional marriage and opposes homosexuality.
The Gaineses are outspoken about their Christian faith, particularly in their new memoir The Magnolia Story, but, according to Trinko, their show is focused on home improvement and contains no discussion of politics and no plugs for the couple’s personal beliefs.
The Gaineses attend Antioch Community Church. RedState reports that, for their article, Buzzfeed contacted the church and was directed to the church’s belief statement which includes this:
“Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime"--a statement that is hardly newsworthy considering it comes from a Christian church.
A number of conservative Christian writers have warned that this apparent campaign against the Gaineses for (maybe) holding traditional marriage views highlights the cultural war many liberals are waging against any who claim Christian faith.
As popular celebrities, the Gainses are key targets.
“Meanwhile, pray for Chip and Joanna and their church. The cultural inquisition is coming,” writes Trevin Wax at The Gospel Coalition.
