Evangelical Leaders Call on Congress to Grant Citizenship to ‘Dreamers’

A group of Christian leaders have penned a statement requesting that Congress make a path to citizenship for the recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, known as “Dreamers.”

According to a report from The Stream, Russell Moore, head of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, led the effort. Two members of President Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Board--Ronnie Floyd, former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Richard Land, the former head of the SBC’s ERLC--also signed the document.

In their letter, titled Statement of Principles on Dreamers, the Christian leaders argued that Dreamers “of good moral character and who are working hard to contribute to our country” should be granted “a pathway to permanent legal status and/or citizenship.”

They continued, noting that “foundational American ideas like freedom, self-government, and equality are worthy of our allegiance as Christians when they harmonize with biblical truths about the dignity of every human being.” It also requires respect for “the integrity of families.

A proper and just solution will bring our neighbors out of the shadows of civic life, cultivate the stability of families, and provide the opportunity to work legally. Such provisions not only serve the interests of Dreamers, but are foundational for the flourishing of our communities,” they concluded.
