Duke University Reverses Decision to Allow Muslim Call to Prayer after Outcry

Duke University announced this week that is would allow the Muslim call to prayer to be sounded from the bell tower every Friday. After a public outcry, the university reverses its decision.

Rev. Franklin Graham, President of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse voiced criticism of Duke’s original announcement, even urging university alumni to withhold financial support until the policy was reversed.

“As Christianity is being excluded from the public square and followers of Islam are raping, butchering, and beheading Christians, Jews, and anyone who doesn’t submit to their Sharia Islamic law, Duke is promoting this in the name of religious pluralism,” Graham posted on his Facebook account

Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations at Duke said in a statement that the university’s effort to “unify was not having the intended effect.”

CNN reports that 700 Muslim students attend Duke University.

Schoenfeld said, "Our Muslim community enriches the university in countless ways. We welcome the active expression of their faith tradition, and all others, in ways that are meaningful and visible."
